Not to equate us & dogs, but there are similarities. If you step on a dog's foot, generally they'll respond with a yelp indicating to us pain. When someone steps on our foot hard enough, we too can yelp indicating pain. So, apparently there is some physical neurological connection that elicits a vocal response. 

Process of discovery happens when we are young. There are valuations made with us that many times shapes the way we interpret things and cause us to behave. So, are dogs much different? Have you even considered that as a possibility?
